Coursework Brief

For the coursework I will be working in a group to produce promotional and marketing products for a film, including:
  • a film trailer (at least 2-minute long)
  • a film poster
  • a magazine front cover featuring the film
A promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer (or full trailer), together with a film magazine front cover, featuring the film and a poster for the film.

We decided on the genre: comedy-drama. I think it will be challenging and also practical to do in terms of narrative. For the first few weeks we'll be doing a lot of research and planning, including conventions for comedy and drama, analysing film trailers, editing, soundtracks and costumes/make-up etc. Within our group it is essential to share each of our ideas and point of views because we each have our own strengths which will support the group and the project. Exposing that my key strengths are graphic design and photography I hope to be assigned to these roles and ensure the group's ideas come together.

Film Idea

Each of us in the group have a variety of ideas, the task of creating a solid idea will be easier if we mix and match potential attributes for our film trailer.

Our idea is stimulated by films we've seen. I particularly favour the films True Romance and Clueless, and would like to explore the themes relationships, identity and individuality which are common amongst those titles. Our main research will be familiar film titles, involving school life and friendships, mainly films such as 10 Things I Hate About You, Easy A and Freak Friday. This will hopefully give us insight to the typical conventions in comedy-drama (and fantasy) film genre.

I initially proposed the following storyline and ideas:
Five members of the school’s student council encounter a bizarre phenomenon when, one day, two members temporarily switch personalities. The same scenario begins to happen to the other members, throwing their daily lives into chaos. At first the students find some amusement among the events but this connection also exposes their painful scars from their pasts.
Potential film title (film trailer) - 'The Fear and Desire for the Strange'

Genre - Comedy/Drama/Fantasy

Settings/Props - At a school classroom to establish main setting.
Paper work materials, folders, books, stationary, desks and school posters/flyers.

Unique Selling Point - Storyline offers a twist to your typical high school life comedy films.

Target Audience - Our chosen target audience will be teenage boys and girls fm ages 13 to 21 who will be able to relate to the key significant themes we chose to highlight in our research, storyline and script.
